Iommi, Dio, Butler And Ward Reunion ConfirmedIommi, Dio, Butler And Ward Reunion Confirmed
Posted by Celia on 2006/10/25
A representative for Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has confirmed that the highly anticipated and much-rumored reunion of Iommi, Ronnie James Dio, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward appears to be shaping up and taking a new form. After various promoters have approached the former Sabbath bandmates’ respective representatives, the guys have started taking all of this very seriously, as they have aparently wanted to reunite for some time now. It looks as if the new shape may be that of Heaven And Hell — that is the moniker that the band is likely to use on their new venture. If all goes well, Heaven And Hell should be hitting the road in early 2007.

In an August 16, 2006 appearance on the syndicated radio show "Rockline", Dio had the following to say about the possibility of further collaborations with Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi:

"We’ve already written one [new] song together. The reason for that is that there’s a release coming out, it’s called "Black Sabbath: The Dio Years" — they’ve already done one, of course, "Black Sabbath: The Ozzy Years"; that was the beginning and, really, the best part of it all — but they’ve decided to do one, again, "Black Sabbath: The Dio Years", and we wanted to make it a little but more special, not just give you things you’ve not heard from a live perspective. These are two things you’ll never hear again — two new songs. We are going to do that. It’s been fun already. The one we’ve done — the one that I’ve done with Tony has been really wonderful — just great to realize how magnificent a player he was. You forget that after 10 years at a time that you don’t work with someone. So we are gonna be doing that. And I hope you’ll like it. I think it’ll be great."

On the rumors of him possibly rejoining Black Sabbath, Dio said, "There’s always rumors about everything — about a Rainbow reunion, about a Black Sabbath reunion. Our purpose was to do this because we wanted to have this product be a bit more special than anything else — not just, ’Here’s a live track you’ve never heard before.’ I mean, that’s cool, but I’m sure people have heard that. We wanted to do something a bit more special, so the whole band would write and play these songs, and… They’ve wanted to hear them long enough, so here they are. But it’s not anything that we’ve talked about leading to anything other than that. No, it’s for that project."

  • I saw Dio doin Holy Diver album and other solo stuff in Birmingham England. He was better than all those years ago when I last saw him do solo stuff. I really enjoyed it.
But please, not with Sabbath - I saw Ozzy orginal line up a few years ago - again in Brum, and it was awesome and Ozzy is Sabbath.
In my humble opinion that is!

    • I heard Dio singing on the new Tenacious D album, and he really has lost a lot on his voice, he doesn't have that shrieky quality anymore at all. You can barely tell it's him. Not that he was ever that great. Ozzy with Sabbath is the only real Sabbath.
      • Dio's LEGIT as a guy who actually has more musical KNOW HOW
and NATURAL ability than OZZY did when they were both in their PRIMES,
but even at his VERY BEST, Dio simply NEVER could match Ozzy in that
"intangible" area...Ozzy, even when he's a MESS, always had that ENDEARING,
FRIENDLY thing happening on stage AND on an album...Dio never had that.
That separates them, and that's why the ORIGINAL will ALWAYS beat the OTHER Sabbath...
Think the DIO version's got plenty of CREDIBILITY...BUT...It's not SABBATH, though...
Kind of think that they should've CHANGED THE NAME, and promoted as
a "Featuring FORMER MEMBERS OF BLACK SABBATH" deal...probably would be MORE RESPECTED
        that way.

I believe they are going under the name, Heaven and Hell and not using the Sabbath name. I'd check Dio out if he came to my town, I thought his role in Tenacious D was hilarious. Mob Rules and Heaven Hell were great albums, just not to the standard of the previous 8 with Ozzy. I always liked the story that Tony was pissed at Dio and Vinny cause they sneaked into the studio at night and turned down the guitars and turned up the vocals and drums. Not sure if that was ever confirmed by Dio or not.
  • I've got my tickets, have a open mind, Dio may just pull it off. I will let all you Sabbeth heads know how the show was. I can't pass up a good excuse to party on a thursday night or any night for that matter!!! Ozzy is always the crazy, lead singer for Black Sabbeth, noone can replace him and his talent.

Dio's got his bag of tricks but black sabbath with ozzy and bill ward on drums is the real deal. its sooo much more atmospheric with bill ward drumming and ozzy belting out the lyrics.
    • I like BS with Dio & Ozzy. I prefer Ozzy. But Dios contributions are just as great in my opinion. I love both of their solo material too. But again, I like Ozzys better overall.
